The Onasys Difference

The academic research community continues to be underserved by technology. There are many reasons for this, including tight budgets and lengthy contracting process, but result is that many compliance functions are under resourced and forced to rely on manual workflows that ultimately rely on pen, paper, and maybe the odd Excel document or Google Doc to keep up with it all.

Product Landscape

Very few tools are available from third parties to support a robust export controls and shipping logistics program. After reviewing the products available, Weill Cornell Medicine made the decision to develop its own system that served as the foundation of what is now Onasys Controls.

eShipGlobal

An example of a system that provides a limited subset shipping and logistics functionality is eShipGlobal. Its focus is primarily shipping an individual item and it does not provide support for large shipping operations like many academic centers have, including between international campuses and with a global network of partner institutions.

Based on a survey of universities that have evaluated available technologies the past 5 years, particular challenges were identified with the existing product:

  • No functionality to support large shipping program (ordering, consolidation, billing, tracking, and auditing)

  • Does not support automated classification of Dangerous Goods (DGs) or Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) based upon current regulations, which are subject to instantaneous change from Executive Actions.

  • Reporting is limited to 30-day periods and not customizable

  • Does not support “hand carry” needs or support Visual Compliance on domestic shipments

Onasys Difference

In addition to gathering market feedback on deficiencies in available products and solving for these in the platform, Onasys has gone even further by:

  • Creating API integrations with People, Location, and Purchasing systems to create a single source of truth and data entry

  • Developed Custom Reports for both internal and external regulatory audits

  • Built in Dangerous Goods assessment logic based on IATA segregation tables, including excepted quantities and package instructions

  • Improved Coordination with Freight Forwarders

  • Support of “hand carry” shipments, including regulatory and safety review of items being transported in luggage, carry-on baggage (thumb drives, consumables, media)

What’s next

Like technology, regulation can move quickly. It is important to ensure that your organization has a robust system in place to do so that can not just capture data, but also help improve:

  1. Data processing: Do more with your data in less time.

  2. Output generation: One click PDF reports

  3. Record Retention: Unlimited data storage

  4. Reporting: Leverage the power of Tableau to generate meaningful insights and data visualizations

  5. Communication: Automatic end-user notifications make sure that your community stays informed and tasks are completed.
